The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday activated linebacker Reuben Foster and released OG Matt Tobin in order to make room on the roster for Reuben Foster, the team announced.
Foster was reinstated Monday by the NFL after serving a two-game suspension for drug and gun charges he faced during the offseason.
Tobin was signed earlier this month as offensive line depth. After Mike Person and Josh Garnett suffered injuries during Week 1, it’s a bit surprising to see the team release a guard, though. However with Person back starting and playing the whole game on Sunday, plus Garnett slated to return soon, it makes sense that Tobin would be the one to be released.
It’s also possible the coaching staff is wary of Foster’s and Malcolm Smith’s ability to stay healthy, so they decided it'd be best to keep an extra linebacker on the roster.
If the 49ers were to suffer any more injuries on the offensive line, Tobin could always be brought back.
