49ers sign DT Jones as DL Thornton announces retirement

Chris Jones 49ers defensive lineman

The San Francisco 49ers added more depth to an already talented interior line Wednesday by bringing back defensive tackle Chris Jones on a one-year deal, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Jones’ spot on the team was made available because of fellow DL Cedric Thornton’s announcement that he is retiring from the NFL.

Jones in 2016 started six games for the 49ers after being claimed off waivers from Miami, but missed all of 2017 with a hip and groin injury. He recorded 12 tackles in his only six appearances with the team. With an interior defensive line that already is brimming with talent, it will be interesting to see if the signing of Jones is just for more competition, or an insurance policy.
