GM John Lynch: 49ers eager to build around Garoppolo in 2018 draft

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is 4-0 as a starter since pulling on a 49ers uniform, and it looks like San Francisco may never lose a football game ever again.

Well, at least maybe not this calendar year.

But in all honesty, after dispatching a Super Bowl contender in the Jacksonville Jaguars, Garoppolo has lived up to the hype, exceeded it even. He's fully shaken up the football world and everyone, even the toughest critics, are buying in. The eye test, the numbers and milestones, the stories about his intangibles pouring out of the locker room weekly – it all points to him being the long-term solution, and potentially a special one.

Over the weekend, general manager John Lynch talked the mechanics of the deal that saw them land Garoppolo. During that conversation with Fox Sports 1, the GM also discussed the impact the quarterback has had on the organization already, and even shared his eagerness to build around No. 10 in the 2018 offseason.

“(The deal) frees you up in the draft to go focus on building your team around (Garoppolo),” Lynch told sports radio host Colin Cowherd Thursday on FS1. “And that’s something we’re very much looking forward to doing.”

Lynch was specifically asked by Cowherd about addressing the offensive line, which has been a noticeable weakness most of the year, and how important it is to protect Garoppolo.

“We need to improve there,” Lynch said of the offensive line. “We certainly know that. I love the way our guys are battling. But we need to improve at that position.”

In any case, it doesn't sound like the 49ers have any doubt that they're sticking with Garoppolo for the long haul by making it clear that all immediate team-building plans are structured with him in mind.
