Eyeing 2018 NFL free agents 49ers could chase with league-high cap

The 49ers are a desolate 1-9 through 10 games, and the real football junkies out there are already talking about how the team can improve in the draft next year. But before that comes the free agent period, and it’s especially relevant for general manager John Lynch and his team seeing as how they project to be among the league leaders with north of $100 million in available cap space.

When it's all said and done, they should wind up signing plenty of players, on all tiers; from proven Pro Bowl caliber players, to run-of-the-mill starters, special teamers, and just better depth.

With that in mind, I've put together a four-part series profiling those unrestricted free agents Lynch and the coaches may likely evaluate and could pursue in 2018.

Expect more than a few of the mentioned players to be locked up by their team long-term or prevented from hitting free agency with a franchise tag. But until they are, they count as prospective additions. Also, not all listed players are meant to start or even be signed, they're simply evaluated as fits for the 49ers.

The following brings you to analysis of UFAs set to be available, all broken down by specialty, with contract numbers via Spotrac. The franchise tag numbers referenced are last year’s figures working as a baseline for 2018. The 49ers' own pending free agents are not included.
